To return, or not to return?

Catherine Sargent, Lifestyle Editor

In the wake of Freshers’ Week and the first few weeks of lectures, going homeit is inevitable that thoughts turn to somewhere else. This place is comforting, with food and warmth and clean laundry. This place is home.

No matter how far you have come to Manchester, be it Isle of Wight or Isle of Skye, home is always an attractive possibility in first year. Travelling back is tempting, and yes, many people will head home to friends and family within their first semester. However, I would urge anyone reading this not to go home. I understand that it is nice to go back and see friends and family, but realistically, it is a good thing to be away for a few months until Christmas. Not only does this mean you don’t miss out on anything that happens at university, it also ensures that you become as self-reliant as it is possible to be. Going through the usual pangs of homesickness without running back to Mum and Dad means you become tougher and more resilient.

Of course, there are times when you need to go home, but I believe firmly that during your first semester of university, you should avoid going home on a whim at all costs. Besides, the longer you hold out to go home, the better it will be when you finally return to comfort and caring.
