Vegan Hall of Fame

by Helen Stuart, Food and Drink Editor

Vegans are finally shedding their ‘weirdy-beardy’ image as vegan foods are becoming more accessible and the vegan movement finds more prominent role models than ever before: here are a select few who demonstrate how being vegan is only a part of who you are, rather than something that determines your whole identity (as an aforementioned weirdy-beardy)…

1) Heather Mills – whatever your opinion of her tabloid-courting ways, you can’t but respect Mills for her staunch campaigning and militant views on veganism.

2) Morrissey – Manchester’s very own prophet of doom and gloom pioneered the ‘Meat Is Murder’ movement with The Smiths’ album of the same name in 1985.

3) Alicia Silverstone – She’s certainly not Clueless when it comes to animal rights; she has created her own line of natural, animal-cruelty-free beauty products as well as being voted PETA’s Sexiest Female Vegetarian in 2004.

4) Prince – The diminutive rock god certainly knows how to party like it’s 1999, but he does so without causing suffering to animals.

5) Alice Walker – author of The Color Purple and well known for her activism regarding civil and women’s rights.

Alice Walker…she’d give up breathing if someone told her that air had feelings!
