Have you learnt to switch off to the traditional environmentalist bore of an argument that tells you that you are killing a penguin every time you don’t walk? If this is the case I assure you this piece contains no such Greenpeace guilt trip but in fact explores a whole new dimension to the advantages of walking for students in Manchester.
Having been in Manchester for two manic weeks now, freshers such as myself are beginning to discover the joys of the big city and atmosphere of the university campus. This exciting sensation however is tainted by intrigue as we see our bank balance falling at speeds never experienced before. The answer to such a dilemma is remarkably simple. We can combine the daily experience of the pulsating hub of the Oxford Road with a satisfaction of both a free journey and the choice of the ‘healthy option’.
Really, what are the alternatives? A bus journey that, what with all the traffic lights, goes about as fast as the pedestrians anyway. A jaunt on a Magic bus would make a great Top Gear style race with those already converted to the Oxford Road stroll. That is if Top Gear liked its races slow and mind-numbingly tedious. Or you could face the roads on two wheels, seeing the world pass you by with your only company being the voice in your head telling you that perhaps this time that bus won’t pull out?
Even walking around university you feel a sense of belonging combine with the idea that you are getting to know the place. On a bus or a bike you will undoubtedly miss out on this. Therefore, aside from little Pingu’s life being saved down on Cape Horn, walking is also about staying healthy what with all that alcohol being consumed, experiencing the real Manchester you came here for and ultimately the best way to utilise the heaviest density of Subway’s I have ever come across.
