We Were Dancers

by Rhona Ezuma

Baby, we’re dancers
We got that right rhythm
That beep bop to the Django
Shim Sham down the revue.
That’s a beat so special
Something spiritual
As the tempo slips
And our humps bump
And your strong hands catch me
From a peek toed pirouette.
In African pant paces
Lets ballroom dance the Salsa
Skank the Jitterbug with a
Right foot, left foot
Front twirl, back

Slide.

Cos the club is our warden baby
And the Jazz blows our blues

Slide.

We were dancers
But now that tap is gone
I lie on my side
And you snore softly, in aid of it.
And for the best of me, I’ve lost you.
But the rhythm must still move
The heel must still tap to toe
And the beat,
The beat must go on too.
