Fallowfield resident charged with terrorism offences following police raids

by Tom Boyd

A 21-year-old man from Fallowfield has been charged with terrorism offences by Greater Manchester police. Israr Hussain Malik was arrested at his home on Bowdon Avenue, Fallowfield, following pre-dawn raids by the Northwest counter terrorism unit after a lengthy 15-month investigation.

Malik was charged last Monday by police with intention to commit acts of terrorism, policespecifically “violent jihad”, between June 2008 and November 17 of this year.

Three other men who were detained as part of the same operation have now also been charged with terrorism offences. Matthew Newton, 27, of Stalybridge, and Haris Farooqi, 26, from Levenshulme, have been charged with assisting others to commit acts of terrorism during the same period. Munir Farooqi, 52, from Longsight, and father of Haris Farooqi, was charged with three counts of soliciting or encouraging others to murder during the same timeframe.

A 62-year-old man from Bolton, who was also arrested in the same series of raids has been released without charge.

However, public unease surrounding the raids was made visible by a 120-strong protest outside Greater Manchester Police’s headquarters the Sunday before official charges were made.

Greater Manchester police issued a statement regarding the demonstration saying it recognised the concerns the public may have concerning the investigation and that they “fully recognise and respect people’s democratic right to protest.”
