Fashion from the other side: Checked shirts

by Tom Speigler

check menWalk into any bar and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stumbled across auditions for Brokeback Mountain – The Musical. Why? Because for the past year or so, the checked shirt has been a staple in pretty much every man’s wardrobe. Despite this massive influx of check-clad men, this shirt looks as if it’s here to stay.

So how do you avoid wearing yours without looking like an extra from a Spaghetti Western? Looking around campus, I’ve deduced that the checked shirt looks best when left unbuttoned, teamed with a simple or graphic tee, sleeves rolled up high. It also looks great, again left unbuttoned, when layered with a zip-through hoody or chunky knit cardigan.

If you ‘d still prefer to keep it buttoned up, then make sure all your mates aren’t planning on donning theirs too. There’s nothing quite like a whole group of not quite matching, not quite clashing checks. Stick to bigger, bolder checks, and I recommend that your fabric of choice should be flannel – it feels and looks so much nicer than other materials.
And where should you buy?  The fact of the matter is, get it from Topman, and chances are every fourth guy in the room will have it too. We all know turning up to a party in the same clothes as someone else is every girl’s nightmare, and admit it; we don’t exactly relish this situation either. So avoid this girly horror by looking away from the big high street chains. Try charity, vintage or lesser-known shops. You’ll save some pennies and have a great shirt that no one else will.
