Freedom of the city for GB team… and their bikes

by Jane McConnell, News Editor

Freewheelin_smallFreedom of the city was granted to the Great Britain cycling team in honour of their medal success at the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

The Manchester Velodrome is the base for the GB Cycling team and most of the athletes live or train in the city.

Leader of Manchester City Council, Sir Richard Leese, said: “The Great Britain Cycling Team are fantastic ambassadors for the city and are the epitome of everything that makes Manchester great. The Freedom of Manchester is the highest honour that can be bestowed by the city to demonstrate how proud we are of the team and all their achievements.”

Sir Chris Hoy and other members of the track team made a special appearance in the middle of the Kraftwerk performance at the Velodrome during this summer’s Manchester International Festival.
