A University of Manchester student has been voted onto the Amnesty International Student Action Network Committee (STAN). It is the third year in a row that a University of Manchester student has been a member of the committee.

“It’s great to be working at a national level,” said Amanda Walters, the newest member of the committee. “[Student Action Network] aims to form stronger links between all the Amnesty International societies.” It co-ordinates over 100 Amnesty International student groups and organises monthly campaigns.

The former chair of the UMSU Amnesty International society and third-year Politics and Philosophy student was voted to the committee at the Amnesty International UK Student Conference in London earlier this month. Fellow society members from societies across England, Wales and Scotland voted for Amanda Walters after she delivered a speech to the conference. Five other students from across the country were elected onto STAN along with Walters.

She added: “I want to form strong links from the academic groups to the city groups, so graduates will still be involved.” Her plans also include an International Student Conference for greater communication between Amnesty International societies in other countries.
