David Nicholls’ third novel, One Day, was published to critical acclaim in June this year. As well as writing bestselling novels, like the devastatingly funny Starter For Ten, Nicholls also wrote the screenplay for the highly commended BBC adaptation of Hardy’s classic Tess of the D’Urbervilles. He is currently working on a film adaptation of Far From The Madding Crowd. Nicholls is clearly inspired by Hardy’s books and there are striking similarities in their writing style and the sense of destiny that echoes throughout One Day.

Em and Dex have fancied each other throughout their time at Edinburgh University but finally get together on July 15th 1988, graduation night. The novel revisits the two characters on the same day every year, over the next twenty years.

When I looked this book up on the Amazon website, I found an astonishing number of rave reviews with exclamation marks galore. ‘THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!’ the ‘ultimate zeitgeist love story’, ‘the funniest, loveliest book I’ve read in ages, horribly, cringingly, absolutely 100% honest and true to life’, and ‘the best weird love story since The Time Travellers Wife. Every reader will fall in love with it’. And I couldn’t help but agree.
