StudentEye: The vacuum of entertainment

student eyeTelevision, the great vacuum of student life. Plop one in your living room/kitchen to cure all conversational woes. No longer will you need to have to bother your overworked mind generating chit-chat, instead you can just push a switch to receive instant entertainment. Then you and all your favourite flat mates huddle round and each enjoy sitting in a silence only broken by the sniggering chuckles and overdrawn “Oh my Gods” that are induced by modern-era freak shows, such as X-Factor or any desperately controversial channel 4 documentary.

But maybe you and your friends need such an inane group task to be able to deal with hanging out with each other, because it’s easy on the brain cells and God forbid you’d have to think.

Sitting at home watching some completely unnecessary daytime television programme can hardly be said to be making the most of your time at university. Are you really going to look back at your time here and say “Ahh I did some fantastic TV watching at uni”? You may be enjoying the liberty of being able to watch Richard and Judy, but couldn’t you be doing something that actually validates the worthiness of your life?

Now, there are definitely times when watching TV is an acceptable way to spend your life. It has it’s purposes: informing you of world events, keeping you up to date with current social trends and of course, entertainment. However there are so many better, more productive, more social and more worthwhile activities out there. On the other hand, it is possible that creativity, innovation and learning are all overrated. Maybe you will find greater reward in a flashing box of light and noise than a world of colour and sound.
