Top 5 ‘Dude’ Films

by Patrick Cowling

top fiveWe are all Dudes at heart. The loose genre that has formed around this lifestyle nearly always involves a pair of wasters somehow making something of their lives despite their lack of skills and intelligence –which are made up for by pure awesomeness.

5. Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)
Where’s your car Dude? Jesse and Chester don’t remember last night; all they know is Jesse’s car is gone. They piece the night together, encountering all manner of strangers including a transsexual stripper searching for a suitcase of money.

4. Wayne’s World (1992)
Wayne and Garth host an underground TV show – Wayne’s World, which is taken under the commercial wing of slimy advertising agent Ben. We all love the classic moments, like the Bohemian Rhapsody scene in the car, or seeing Ben cavity searched by the cops at the end.

3. Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Bill and Ted are failing history, but are saved by Rufus who gives them a time machine that will help them pass and in doing so save humanity. Legendary air guitar and an increasingly ridiculous plot make this a most Bodacious film.

2. The Big Lebowski (1998)
He’s called “the Dude”, “His Dudeness”, “Duder”or “El Duderino”, and he’s mistaken for a millionaire with the same name and ends up as a go between in a ransom situation, despite being the biggest waster in LA.

1. BASEketball (1998)
Coop and Reemer make up a game as they go along at a party they’ve gatecrashed to win a bet. This new game becomes a national sport with hilarious consequences and the most meaningful conversation ever recorded using only the word “Dude”.
