Battle of the comedians

Michael McIntyre vs Jason Manford

It’s coming up to Christmas and that means plenty of presents to buy and damage your waning student loan with. Of course, a DVD is the obvious choice; funny, benefits you, and can probably be found in the sale at HMV when you’re desperate to just get home and away from the crowds. However, it may be worth shelling out a bit more for something really worthwhile. In these troubled times (credit crunch… yawn…) it might be worth buying a stand-up comedy DVD this Christmas, here are the two best we found…

Michael McIntyre ‘Hello Wembley’

What’s it about? Michael McIntyre at his brilliant best. Plenty of running around on stage, jokes at his expense, and a laugh a minute. If you like him, you’ll love this, as it’s just him, new jokes but the old style that made him famous.

What’s right with it? He makes the audience feel very much part of his performance, referncing old favourites about the man-draw, and his energy is completely infectious.

What’s wrong with it? I love Michael McIntyre, but I came out at the end of it feeling exhausted. A laugh a minute, but rarely any build-up.

Star Rating: 4/5

Jason Manford ‘Live at the Manchester Apollo’

What’s it about? Jason Manford talking about his life, and poking fun at everything that isn’t Manchester. Great audience interaction and brilliant build-up to jokes.

What’s right with it? Manford proves that he is a lot more than his gig on 8 out of 10 Cats and a bit of Manchester-grown humour rarely goes amiss.

What’s wrong with it? At times, because you’re waiting for the snappy one-liners from TV, the build-up can be too long.

Star Rating: 3/5

Anything but McIntyre; he’s as stale as an ejaculate-soaked sock!

(Sorry for the image, by the way — work with what you know, eh?)
