The big picture – Boston.com
www.boston.com/bigpicture
The Boston Globe has a feature on their website dedicated to some of the most remarkable and beautiful pictures I’ve found on the web. The big picture features the weeks most impressive and thought provoking pictures. It is photojournalism at its best and proves the point that a picture speaks a thousand words. I was inspired to get back into photography after visiting this website and I’m sure many of you will feel the same.
Pitchfork
www.pitchfork.com
Pitchfork calls itself the essential guide to independent music and beyond. It features album reviews as well as general commentary on the music scene and industry. The website has a sleek layout and is easy to browse. A very useful site to visit when you want to try out some new music and need some expert advice. There is also a section for you to listen to new songs in a lastfm fashion.
Freecycle
www.freecycle.org
I really like the idea of this site. It was setup to tackle the ever-increasing use of landfills and to try and use a web 2.0 platform to tackle waste management. The site is truly global with over six million members distributed all across the world. The idea is that if you have something you want to get rid of (a table for example) you post it in a group and then someone who happens to search for a table in your area can come and pick it up. It’s a nice idea and has a far more honest feel to it then eBay.
Worldwide telescope
www.worldwidetelescope.org
The worldwide telescope is a beautiful collection of terabytes of pictures and information about our universe. Not only are there millions of digitized pictures of the night sky but there are also articles explaining everything from supernovas to black holes and much more. It is far better than Google earths attempt to map the night sky, and will leave you wanting to buy a telescope and see the night sky for yourself.
Know your meme
knowyourmeme.com
Know your meme is brought to us by The Rocketboom Institute for Internet Studies. It is an online database that documents internet culture, which reports on the most random, funny things to hit the web. Definitely an alternative pick, but well worth a browse. Its one of those sites that will catch on and become an internet phenomenon.
