The Xmas rundown

by Mark Hattersley

OrangeBox360Fancy treating someone this Christmas? Perhaps you’re writing a list, or maybe you’re looking for a gift for someone, which you can inevitably use yourself. Well what says I Love You more than a disc tray full of glorious gaming goodness, especially at a bargain price. Here’s a rundown of the five best options for a taut purse string, which you might have missed.

5. Batman: Arkham Asylum

Though still carrying the bulk of it’s price tag, getting such a recent game for under £20 would be a safe choice. The Dark Knight explodes luminously onto our current generation screens like a feisty firework. Sure it may not last very long, but it’s something you’ll want to see over and over again.

4. Killzone 2

Chances are, if you own a Playstation 3, you’ve already played and loved Killzone 2. If Sony’s black beauty is on your Christmas list, make sure you pick up a copy of this fantastic futuristic first-person shooter. Essential is an understatement.

3. Lost Odyssey

One for the JRPG fan. Drawing influences from the archetypal Final Fantasy series, and coming complete on 4 discs (!), Lost Odyssey’s epic narrative will keep you warm throughout those cold winter months. Packed to the brim with over-the-top action and sexually ambiguous characters, it draws a perfect tribute towards its predecessors, while adding enough to keep the genre fresh. 2 years old = Dirt cheap.

2. Farcry 2

The marmite of the modern gaming world, Farcry 2 is a huge free-roaming adventure in Africa. Your Job: find and eliminate a local weapon supplier who has been fuelling a civil war, known only as The Jackal. Your friends are few; your enemies are plenty. The gunplay is in depth and intense and the fire effects are dazzling. Many criticise Farcry’s initial difficulty as you’re dropped into the heart conflict; well, in the immortal words of Leo DiCaprio, This Is Africa. If you’re the type of gamer who enjoys a challenge, there’s no reason why Farcry 2 is anything but superb.

1. The Orange Box

Hmm, how to describe The Orange Box without building it up too much? Well this selection box of games contains not only the fan favourite that is Half Life 2, but also the two acclaimed pieces of episodic content which were released as sequels soon after. In the box is also the class-based online multiplayer game Team Fortress 2. and the award magnet that is the 3D puzzle game Portal… brilliant, superb, mouth-watering, life-altering, can’t believe it’s so cheap, must-have, stonking great gem of a game! … Bugger!
