The Mancunion (Student Direct) is the largest student newspaper in the UK, covering news and views for students at university in Manchester.
With a readership of over 20,000, it serves the Universities of Manchester, Salford and Bolton, and Manchester Metropolitan. It is a weekly publication which is distributed every Monday during term-time in the unions and around campus. Student Direct has with three campus-specific editions: Salford, Bolton and The Mancunion.
Student Direct is produced exclusively for students by students. As such, we are always looking for contributors- and you can commit as much or as little time as you want. Most people who write for Student Direct hadn’t written for a newspaper before they came to university, but some of those who have worked on the paper have gone on to work among the country’s best and most respected journalists.
The Mancunion
The University of Manchester edition of Student Direct launched in September 2009. Prior to the re-brand, Student Direct had been around since 1992, but its predecessor, The Mancunion dates back to 1973. Its predecessor, The Manchester Independent has its origins in the 1920s. As part of the Student Direct group, The Mancunion continues to work with Salford and Bolton to produce the widest distributing student newspaper in the UK. However, as The Mancunion it plans to further consolidate its status as the newspaper of the University of Manchester Students’ Union.
