About Us

Student Direct is the largest student newspaper in the UK, covering news and views for students at university in Manchester.

With a readership of over 50,000, it serves the Universities of Manchester, Salford and Bolton. It is a weekly publication which is distributed every Monday during term-time in the unions and around campus. This year Student Direct has re-launched with three new campus-specific editions: Salford, Bolton and Mancunion.

Student Direct is produced exclusively for students by students. As such, we are always looking for contributors- and you can commit as much or as little time as you want. Most people who write for Student Direct hadn’t written for a newspaper before they came to university, but some of those who have worked on the paper have gone on to work among the country’s best and most respected journalists.

Student Direct: Mancunion

The Manchester edition of Student Direct launched in September 2009. Prior to the re-brand, Student Direct had been around since 1992, but its predecessor, the Mancunion dates back to 1931. In its newest incarnation, Student Direct: Mancunion hopes to combine the best of both. As part of the Student Direct group, it continues to work with Salford and Bolton to produce the widest distributing student newspaper in the UK. However, as Mancunion it plans to further consolidate its status as the newspaper of the University of Manchester Students’ Union.
