Over half of all students work part-time to help fund their studies and living costs. At the Careers Service, we’d recommend that you work no more than 15 hours a week during term-time. If you think this could impact negatively on your degree it would make sense to do less. When looking for work think about your course timetable. If you’ve got an early start, you’ll struggle if you’ve been working late the night before.
The ideal is to find a part-time job related to your future career. But even unrelated work can give you a range of useful skills that graduate employers look for, e.g. team work, communicating effectively, commercial awareness, working under pressure and so on.
Visit the part-time jobs fair on Thursday 4th October, 11am to 3pm, Sugden Centre, Grosvenor Street, Manchester. Find out more online www.manchester.ac.uk/careers/fairs
You can also find jobs advertised on your Careers Service website at www.manchester.ac.uk/careers/workexperience as well as information on tax, the minimum wage and employment rights.
