Cockroach Catastrophe

AL BILAL restaurant, one of the many South Asian food establishments along the much fabled Curry Mile, was slapped with fines totally £13,200, after six breaches in health and hygiene standards found during an inspection late last year.

One of the more major breaches was the presence of a cockroach infestation; a fact that the owner of the restaurant was keen to shrug off, which is, put simply, quite alarming.

As many of the restaurants are specifically targeted at students, it cannot be stressed how dangerous it is that pristine standards were not maintained. Though food poisoning may not top the world’s list of maladies, it can still be very dangerous, with untreated cases of salmonella potentially resulting in death.

Al Bilal claims to have now cleaned up their act. Indeed, the council was keen to point out that one reason that the fine was so strict was to deter other potential offenders through example. We can only hope.

Student Direct urges students to keep an eye out for any establishment that does not meet acceptable hygiene requirements. Remember, if you can see something being done that is obviously against the rules, you are not required to eat it, and chances are you shouldn’t have to pay for it.
