40 Days and 40 Nights

LENT IS well under way and many students have resolved to make some interesting sacrifices. Along with the regulars given up for Lent (chocolate and alcohol being favourites), some students are quitting Facebook, the ever-popular social networking site, which had almost 8.5 million visitors in January.

Though not officially recognized as a medical disorder, Internet and online usage are fast becoming possible forms of addiction, with usage hours soaring. Some institutions in China and South Korea have already created clinics to help combat Internet and video game addictions, and it is being seen as an emerging trend, with care facilities opening in both Europe and the United States.

The Internet is a powerful tool, both for communication, research and enjoyment. But like all good things, it should be enjoyed in moderation or the fruits turn sour.
