The trees are blossoming, which can only mean one thing – it’s exam time. As another academic year draws to a close, the library is heaving with final years frantically daydreaming about post exam life, and then realising that ‘post exam life’ is actually looking a bit empty, so they should probably start knuckling down (better late than never).
After many months of sticking fingers in ears, the University have finally started to listen to the concerns of their students. Agreeing to open up the Arthur Lewis building and trialing 24 hour library access are wise decisions that will have a very positive impact on the learning experience for students here at Manchester. It’s a shame such commonsensical moves took so long coming. It remains to be seen whether the much talked about ‘Teaching and Learning Review’ will deliver the goods on contact hours and essential teaching facilities.
The Students’ Union’s political season has drawn to a close with a large general meeting, where a big debate ensued over whether or not the Union should do anything. The Union’s members decided that the fight for free education was a battle for another day, the military were welcome to stay and that the environment was pretty cool after all. Next year we can look forward to a very different Executive Committee who have the potential to lead the Union in the right direction. Many will be waiting with baited breath to see how far along the road they take the organization.
And as for us here at Student Direct? We would like to thank you for reading, contributing to the debate and shouting at us when you disagree. We’ve had a ball. Best of luck in your exams, we hope the future is fun filled and prosperous. Farewell and bon voyage.
