¡Forward, Russia! @ Academy 3 27.04.08

Johnny Foreigner are stuck in Amsterdam. Lucky them. Youthful Leeds quintet The ABC Club save the day and their Interpol styled tunes are interesting enough, although the stagnant stage presence doesn’t excite.

Up next, Dance to the Radio darlings Grammatics’ intricate melodic indie is extremely well crafted, dramatic and at times epic. New single ‘D.I.L.E.M.M.A’ is the stand out track, merging the synth modernism of Bloc Party with the grandeur of Arcade Fire or Cursive.

¡Forward, Russia!, tonight the young kids’ favourite, were impressive, with Tom Woodhead’s mic-led antics as deranged as ever. Crowd surfing happens, the kids get told off by Whiskas, they crowd surf some more, and I laugh. ¡Forward, Russia! aren’t faultless tonight, but then they’re certainly not boring; their new material is well received, and the finale of ‘Spanish Triangles’ is very exciting. Onwards to Moscow! Or Madrid? Or Leeds?! I’m unsure…
