Addictive Launch Night @ MTwo 17.4.08

It goes without saying that the launch of a new weekly club night should be a night to remember on all counts if it is to be popular with locals on a regular basis – and the launch of Addictive seemed to do just. There hasn’t been a weekly R&B night at MTwo for two years, so the pressure was on for Addictive to deliver.

The night was kicked off in style by combining its launch with a celebration for none other than UK veteran DJ Steve ‘Smooth’ Sutherland, who returned to the Manchester club for a second year in a row to celebrate four years DJing on Galaxy FM. Mr ‘Smooth’ graced the decks around twelve, and clubbers were treated to a flawless mix of old and new, R&B and hip hop, bassline and UKG, dancehall and bashment. His innovative cross-genre mixes, such as Capleton’s ‘Inna Her Heart’ with Sticky’s ‘Dollar Sign’, were big crowd-pleasers – proof that his three MOBO awards for Best Club DJ are well deserved.

As if a multi-award winning club DJ wasn’t enough, there was also a live PA from new UK bassline act Addictive, whose performance of their current single ‘Gonna Be Mine’ in the middle of Sutherland’s two-hour set managed to get the crowd hyped and set the tone for the following half hour mix of electro and urban-dance, which was also a real crowd pleaser.

Resident DJs L-Dubz, Dialog and DJ Miller kept the music flowing and the vibe electric long after Sutherland had finished his set, giving the legend himself a run for his money by playing a great selection of old favourites such as Ludacris’ ‘Move’ and Joe Budden’s ‘Pump It Up’, as well as current club bangers like Snoop’s ‘Sensual Seduction’. The night ended on a real high, leaving everyone wanting more, and almost guaranteeing a repeat performance next week.

The venue, an old converted theatre, has a capacity of 1600, and at the height of the night it appeared to be full which showed the high demand for a weekly event of this kind. The new night looks set to satisfy the desires of Manchester’s urban ravers, who up until now really only had Kama Sutra Thursdays at Opus on a weekly basis. But with the promise of more top UK acts, special themed nights and red carpet events to come at Addictive, MTwo now looks like the place to be on a Thursday night.
