alt.vision: Moves08

Moves08 is a short film and new media festival hitting Manchester for the forth time between the 22nd - 26th April, showcasing short films and installations in usual and unusual screening contexts throughout the city, including cinemas, bars and gallery spaces.

For four days viewers can enjoy everything from short film, such as Outside the Box and Visions D’Ailleurs, to a master class with Donald Glowinski on the ‘Open Source’ real-time editing software that his team has developed. This year’s special guest is Judy Gladstone (Executive Director of celebrated Canadian TV channel Bravo!Fact) who will present the outstanding shorts produced by Bravo!Fact, including Oscar nominated I Met The Walrus, and give the festivals keynote speech.

To enjoy this unique festival you can purchase one of the three passes available. The most expensive offers access to screenings, events and conferences and costs £50. Although it may seem pricey, this fee guarantees an incredible journey through sound and movement in film. Moves08 also provides the opportunity to debate content and there is plenty to share through the four days of conference and industry events.

Even if you are watching the funds Moves08 still has a lot to offer. Film installations, such as the Claudia Kappenberg’s Moebius and photo-montages, in the lightboxes of Piccadilly Metrolink station created by artist and designer June Stockins, are all free to visit. Moves is also running a filmmaking lab (for free!) where participants make as many short films as they can in the record time of five days.

This festival should not be reserved for film geeks and is an amazing opportunity for everyone to gain an insight into the exciting world of experimental film work.

Moves08 runs 22nd – 26th April.
