“The dream of one summer, this last summer I had. It’s almost as if I had one continuous dream and the product of achieving it is the album you have here…” So says Bradford Cox (frontman/provocateur of Atlanta, Georgia’s ‘ambient-punk’ five piece, Deerhunter) of his debut venture under solo moniker, Atlas Sound.
And of this sound, which swims through psychedelic dream realms, any semblance of tranquillity is unsettlingly undercut as the sound traverses the eerier side of childhood nightmare visions. The roots can be traced back to Bradford’s childhood, no doubt his summer spent on a children’s hospital ward has played a pivotal part on the colouring of this darkly ethereal music. A wonderfully complex, seemingly incongruous collection of swirling sound, abstract rhythms and Bradford’s untreated vocals. An offbeat pop gem. Pick: Scraping Past.
