Forget the glitzy glamour of Cannes and the sweltering heat of Sundance; top quality Film Festivals and special screenings are invading Blighty this summer.
Up north, there’s the 62nd Edinburgh International Film Festival (18th-29th June), a highlight of the city’s festival season. This year’s opening night is John Maybury’s The Edge of Love, a “seductive and fascinating film” based upon the tempestuous love life of Dylan Thomas, starring Keira Knightly and Sienna Miller.
Down south, June delivers an annual treat: The Scoop’s free, outdoor Summer Movie Season (6th-29th). Sit under the stars beside Tower Bridge, with blanket and picnic, and catch a classic flick like Memento or Singin’ In The Rain – get there early as it fills up quick!
Music Festivals are also getting in on the big-screen act – look out for top showcases from Halloween Films and Future Shorts in film tents and hillsides. Glastonbury’s massive outdoor screen favours cult names and blockbusters.
Finally, a real jewel in Blighty’s cinema crown: the Portobello Film Festival (28th Aug-14th Sept), the UK’s biggest independent film competition. This is THE place to catch the Leighs, Loachs and, um Richies of tomorrow!
