Dir: Neil Marshall
Starring: Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins, Malcolm MacDowell
British director Neil Marshall makes his third gory feature with Doomsday, depicting events surrounding a lethal virus named “reaper” which infected Scotland in 2008. To prevent the spread of the killer virus, the whole of Scotland was quarantined and excluded from the rest of the country with a harsh barricaded wall. No one has come out and no one has gone in until, in 2033, the “reaper” returns to seek revenge on London.
Heroic, sexy and courageous Eden (Sinclair) returns to the site of her 2008 rescue, leading a police task force trying to find an all-important cure for the virus – one they believe to be lurking behind the barricade. This is a breach into an unknown world. Once over the wall the rain and gloom serve to heighten the ambience as the director creates a mood of high suspense. As they delve further into the wilderness their mission is ambushed by cannibalistic bandits who are running riot in the forgotten land; their punk identities mirroring the anarchistic way in which the country is now run.
Scenes of gore and violence create a sense of impending doom over the fate of those on a vital mission. Eden remains heroic throughout the film, portraying a strong character with much determination. Viewers warm to her instantaneously and will her to succeed. The pace intensifies as they battle on, with audiences exposed to medieval style battle scenes juxtaposed with modern car chases, creating a mixture of shock, fear and anticipation. All in all, the film mixes emotive scenes with action and suspense, culminating in a dynamic thrill fit for junkies of fear and suspense.
