Hot Milk – 2nd Birthday & Interview with Max a.k.a the riddim master
Thursday 18th October
9/10
HOT MILK, a now classic reggae night on the Manchester scene, did not disappoint at it’s second month back after a break for summer.
September’s Freshers’ Week night was packed to the capacity by 11pm, not a regular occurrence for the Attic which usually play host to non-commercial musical ventures. October’s Hot Milk was full by midnight, just showing that the curious freshers and had little to do with the night’s success. Familiar faces can always be spotted at these monthly reggae occurrences because anyone who has gone can agree that the vibe, chilled out and infectious, will keep you coming back for more.
Who are the founders of Hot Milk and how did it come about?
Ok, the founders of Hot Milk were me (Max a.k.a. the riddim master), Jo (a.k.a Joey B), Eoin (a.k.a Irish Moss) Plus Jean Luc. Joey B and me had been DJing since we met at the start of uni, using my sound system at parties (under the name 'Guiding Star Hi-Fi') and playing on local radio. We then played at 'Ya Get Meh', a hip-hop/reggae night our mates put on at the attic around 2004-5. Irish Moss had also been DJing around this time and put on a night called 'back yard' at the roadhouse. We got talking and decided to join forces as we had the same idea about things. We got the name hot milk from an old Jackie Mittoo studio one rhythm that forms the basis of Shabba Ranks hit 'respect', which is an anthem for us.
Have you ever considered putting it on weekly? It's always packed and seems to be one of the most well known student oriented reggae nights in Manchester.
We've considered the option of doing the night more often, but that would firstly be more work, and more importantly would make the nights less memorable. We like to leave people wanting more! Besides, people can catch us as guests on other nights like king spinna at the mint lounge and the carnival club night, not to mention the odd drunken selection at house parties.
Would you consider your second birthday a success?
Yes, the second birthday was a massive success, people dancing, nuff hot girls, and of course - a beastly selection from our guest Todla T.
All I've got to add is that we'd like to thank everyone who's supported us over the last two years, especially Sam Kitchen who does the lion’s share of the flyering. Remember - Hot Milk is the third Thursday of every month - Next is Simon Dan, singing in a fine style on Guiding Star Hi-Fi on November 15th.
