Hoya:Hoya @ the Music Box 23.02.08

After the conclusion of the time-honoured monthly night, Electric Chair, something pretty special needed to take its last-Saturday-of-the-month slot at the music box.

Hoya:Hoya certainly delivered, with a launch night featuring resident DJs Jonny Dub and Ryan Hunn, and live visuals from Sketch City and Norvun Devolution. Hoya:Hoya, meaning ‘fresh’ in Japanese, is the club night love-child from the Sketch City fam, who have been providing Manchester with creativity inducing beats for the last two and a half years, every second Sunday of the month at the Contact Theatre.

For the launch spectacular our ears were blessed with nightlong sets from the main men. In the front room we had Ryan Hunn feeding us his diverse selection. To describe his style as eclectic is an understatement, as he guided us from deep instrumental hip-hop to techno through to dubstep and more, in the blink of a beat. Ryan showed off his knowledge of what makes a good club track and effortlessly weaved from genre to genre changing the pace of the night depending on what the crowd wanted.

Jonny Dub was much more raw when it came to his selection. Similarly to Ryan, he happily bounced from genre to genre, making for an extremely enjoyable evening. The highlight for me was definitely when he dropped Barbwire by Nora Dean. Jonny leant me an insight into his technique; “I tend to never plan any further then the next record and have a very loose and disorganized approach to DJing” The results were inspired as he worked the skankers into a frenzy, soaking up their energy to fuel his passion.

It is safe to say that there was a great vibe in the place for the launch of Hoya:Hoya and I’m left eagerly awaiting the next instalment on Saturday 29th March, in which we have guests James T. Cotton (Dabrye), Todd Osborn and Toddla T, gracing us with their presence and beats.
