James, Son of James

A possible definition for art, dance and theatre could be ‘a creation that makes you feel a particular way, which evokes certain emotions within you’. This production managed to make me feel anything and everything all in one performance. This is a tale of love, betrayal and revenge as well as illustrating the profound difference one man can make to a modern day community. Set in Irelands Midlands, this piece is the finale to Michael Keegan-Dolan’s Trilogy for Fabulous Beast.

James returns to the place where he grew up for the funeral of his father, and immediately his life becomes embroiled with those of the characters around him. Individually he makes a difference to their lives, helping where help is needed. The community is made up of quite dark family dysfunctions, including suicide, grief and infidelity. James is oblivious to these situations, and through his affects on each character is made into a very righteous and respectable character.

Half way through the play it almost reaches a conclusion; each unhappy scenario within the play has been resolved with the help of everyone’s new friend. However, the play takes a drastic new turn and the sinister aspects of each character start to unfold. Due to a series of unfortunate events the town needs a scapegoat, and who better to fit the bill than our new hero. Being true to his almost Jesus-type nature, I’m sure you can guess the end for our dear James. Although you can see the reasons behind each character’s action, you can in no way comprehend them.

The overall performance was good, but not wonderful, with dance as the highlight. Unfortunately, this provided fabulous potential that was not used to full advantage. In particular the performances of Antonia Grove (The Politician’s Wife) and Milos Galko (The Farmer) brought the stage to life, but this did not counterbalance the bad acting of the others. With unexpected humour used throughout, and some delightful dance scenes, this performance was a satisfying and thought provoking experience.
