Kittykat Club has almost everything you could want in a cheesy, drunken, camp night out. Hosted by Miss Petra, the razor-tongued drag queen just that little bit too reminiscent of Lilly Savage, the night has highs that are well worth the three pounds entry fee and far outweigh the few lows.
Thursday is designated cocktail night, with buy one get one free all night. Walking in, you’ll think you need the drink; the night is by no means packed out despite its many charms. Don’t let the empty spaces put you off though; it’s not really a dance that you’re here for.
There is one and only one reason to come to KittyKat Club: a drag cabaret act that takes in everything from Shirley Bassey’s classic “Hey Big Spender” to my personal favourite, The Spice Girls Medley. Yes, somebody does need to tell lead drag artist David Dale that he is not Jim Carey and therefore should not pull grotesque faces quite so repetitively as he mimes along to the music, but as a whole the cabaret is pure entertainment.
The night is not without its problems; the constant switching between cabaret and dancing becomes as wearing as Mr Dale’s facial expression, but this is a very minor hitch. There is much opportunity for cocktail-induced impromptu pole dancing without the morning-after embarrassment of all of studentville having seen, though be warned that KittyKat’s dancers will put you to shame with their enviable abilities.
The dancers, along with their lovely showgirls, bring the small stage to life as they transport you to Vegas with a hiss of smoke-effects, a burst of glitter and lots of thrusting. This is, after all, just stereotypical, gay-as-the-day-is-long bit of fluff, but boy is it entertaining. For extra fun, bring along a desperate straight male and watch in delight as Miss Petra rips apart his poling technique over the sound system, as happened last week.
Though not a night I can see being well attended by Manchester’s straight male population anytime soon, this is a great night out for the gaggle of girls and, obviously, assorted GBFs. KittyKat Club may only represent the clichéd version of uncomplicated, manufactured gay culture, but makes a great night out nevertheless.
