This night was certainly a novel experience. A strange concoction of aggravation and hilarity fed to an unusual crowd in an awkward venue.
On entering, the first thing I heard was that Tim Westwood had sent home all the other DJs in the main room and that only he would be playing the whole night. This was a big middle finger salute to anyone who had come to witness the well-established quality of the Sex With Robots DJs. The crowd generally did not seem to mind this and the main room remained steadily crowded, with everyone enjoying the less commercial side of commercial hip-hop and R&B.
Westwood offered a great amount of comic relief. It was hard to believe the majority of the crowd were taking this 52-year-old king of wiggas incessant hyping over the tunes seriously. The word ‘pussy’ was particularly prevalent. Hilarious.
There was a very short intermission in the Westwood show in which Lethal Bizzle played. If you blinked you might have missed his set, which only lasted about half an hour. You had to hand it to him as his fleeting performance was pretty charged and impressive, bringing his whole crew up and creating the air of intimidation which complements his brand of garage/grime so well. The crowd were also pretty charged and reverted to a kind of aggravated semi-mosh that reciprocated what was going down on stage.
The small drum ‘n’ bass room was a preferred refuge from the fruity novelty of the main room with local MCs clearly having a good time. I was somewhat confused by the presence of a live bassist that you could not really hear, as there was a lot of bass going on already.
This was a peculiar night but it had its interesting moments. If you did not go, you defiantly missed out on something, but I am finding it hard to put my finger on exactly what.
