I’d always had Martina Topley-Bird down as the sort of musician who makes the perfectly acceptable but offensively bland background music. You know, the sort of thing that trendy young professionals put on during dinner parties in a vain attempt to prove that they’re still down with the kids; the perfect accompaniment for your organic asparagus.
And, y’know what, that is kinda the case. The Blue God is a filtered version of the Bristol trip-hop scene where Martina made her name performing with her ex, Tricky. The same seductive voice over the same low-key beats is all very nice, but this isn’t 1994. However, with a little bit of magic dust from Gnarls Barkley genius/production whiz-kid Danger Mouse an otherwise tasteless album occasionally reveals itself to have a spicy edge. Stick this on and invite your friends around for a meal.
Pick: Carnies.
