After much hype, a string of successful singles and some superb E.Ps, Tokyo Police Club have finally unleashed their full-length album. I say full length, but you’ll have difficulty finding a song on Elephant Shell that is over three minutes.
No worries though, who needs it when your band has such a distinctive sound; just look at the Pixies. While you may expect rough production, megaphone vocals and distorted instrumentation from past singles such as ‘Nature of the Experiment’, TPC have swapped the rawness for clean vocals and sparkly melodies.
New single ‘Tessellate’ is a perfect example; David Monk’s vocals and lyrical ability really stand out here, as “Dead lovers salivate, broken hearts tessellate tonight”, leaves you infected and wondering, while TPC have moved onto the next song already. With catchy choruses and keyboard melodies like this though, Tokyo Police Club don’t look in danger of running out of steam. Pick: Your English is Good.
