The Young Knives with a string section? Yes, but wait, before you run away muttering about selling out, on new song ‘Turn Tail And Run’ the string section is used sporadically in short sharp bursts, not dissimilar to the angular guitar riffs that characterised the band’s debut album.
As well as ‘Turn Tail And Run’, tonight the band take the opportunity to showcase more songs from imminent second album Superabundance. The new songs are a showcase for a fuller, less angular sound and Pixies-like sudden dynamic shifts. New song ‘Lightswitch’ is particularly impressive characterised by low growling bass, an anthemic chorus and shifts between hard rocking guitars and smooth melodic harmonies. As well as new songs, fan-favourites from the first album are also played and it a rousing rendition of ‘Loughborough Suicide’ closes this highly impressive gig.
