Like many, I pondered slightly over the cartoon image of piling pots and pans, thinking, what the hell is this all about. Surely the news hasn't come down to telling students about how to keep their halls tidy. This would be patronising. Hmmmm. So why else is there this image on the front cover of our student newspaper. Big news: dirty pans have taken control of the world. Fighting for freedom against the oppressive cillit bang spray. Oh no... the truth was a lot more horrifying....the entire front and back page was consumed entirely by a Tesco advert.
The 12th November issue's front page, sorry, second page headline sprawled the words 'Sell-off' referring to the North Campus sell-off. How can the student newspaper spout these words when they themselves, by having a front and back page devoted to a Tesco advert, are in my eyes 'selling-off' to the corporate giants out there who have already taken over our media with their hipnotic advertising. I believed Student Direct to be an autonomous, student-centred paper and I felt sick in the bottom of my stomach at the sight of Tesco’s tacky cartoon all over the front page. How can one of the largest Multi-national Corporations in the world have connived their way on to a University newspaper 'by' students "for " students. Could this have anything to do with Alan Gilbet's high-ranking role in Tesco's? I do hope not!
