Dress to Empress

WITH SPRING stealthily advancing upon us with a hint of the Summer that is to come, ‘tis the perfect time to reveal the goddess within you.

The Spring/Summer 08 shows have seen subtle infiltrations of influence from Ancient Greece and Rome parading along the catwalks.

Lanvin, my personal favourite, displayed beautifully soft silks and satins, draped in luxurious abundance indulgently cocooning the body. Colours were sumptuous: royal tones of blue, deep navy and pearly greys. The pallete also encompassed rich creams ranging from shades of sand and stone, permeated with sequins, accompanied by a few complementary pieces in nude and white.

Drapes and pleats fell flawlessly from single shoulders in the form of toga-reminiscent creations, tightly belted to highlight and retain the waist. To finish the look, these were sheltered underneath lightweight April-shower appropriate macs of the similar shade.

However, such rich, romantic, flowing attire isn’t a suitable nor desired image for everyone. To counteract such femininity, juxtapose the graceful aspects of your wardrobe with hard ‘gladiator-esque’ edges á la Balenciaga, Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta, who all donned a more power-influenced take. Models were accoutred in black and tan sky scraper heels spawning multitudes of belts, leather straps along with laces, climbing and caressing all the way up the lengths of their  long limbs, as well as brass buckle interspersions.

The Grecian/Gladiator trend has found its way into most high street stores, all following suit. Grecian accents are everywhere; you’re sure to come up against rope detailing, plaits, woven belts and straps, ruched and pleated dresses, studs galore…

Accessory choices yield thick woven gold necklaces, twisted bangles and earrings punctuated by beautiful stones and jewels. Topshop, Urban Outfitters and All Saints have a great selection of gladiator belts, wide tough black and dark leather, with tarnished silver embellishments and studs.

Therefore for an eclectic wardrobe, mix it up with a bit of the ol’ Ancient Rome and your look will reign to the last minor detail, the supreme soveriegn.
