The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy

Author: Fiona Neill
Arrow, £6.99

THE LEADING character in this novel, Lucy Sweeney, finds herself unexpectedly in the dull, dreary and extremely tiring world of motherhood. Having graduated from The University of Manchester, with a flying career in television behind her, the job of a struggling mother is far removed from her dream life. She cannot even remember the last time she had sex with her husband, and there is an incredible pile of dirty laundry piling up.

Lucy’s charm is endearing, and she somehow comes to the attention of Sexy Domesticated Dad, a title that the mothers at her children’s school have nicknamed the good-looking writer who drops off his son most days. Lucy soon finds herself in a web of deceit as she tries to rebuild her distanced relationship with her husband Tom, whilst trying not to succumb to the flirtations of Sexy Domesticated Dad. On top of this, the school’s hierarchy of beautiful yummy mummies seem to despair of Lucy’s parenting techniques.

The Secret Life of A Slummy Mummy has been heralded as the new Bridget Jones; whilst perhaps not quite living up to this standard, it is nevertheless a heart-warming read that makes you question the nature of relationships, and whether marriage is indeed forever.
