Chat to Charlie

Used and Abused

Dear Charlie,

My friend uses me all the time. She borrowed my library card and has run up fines, she borrows all my clothes and jewellery and doesn’t return them. I really like her but can’t stand her antics anymore. How can I tell her to stop taking advantage of me whilst keeping her as a friend? Hannah, 18

Dear Hannah,

If you haven’t already brought this issue up with her, what’s stopping you?! Maybe she doesn’t realise that her behaviour is upsetting you. However, if she persists in taking liberties, it may be time to resort to dirty tactics. She should soon appreciate how to be a good friend!

Fancy a Threesome?

Dear Charlie,

My best friend and boyfriend get on really well together. They like the same stuff and I often feel pushed out of their conversations to the point of feeling jealous of their relationship. I don’t want to split them up, but I can’t help how I feel. Caroline, 20

Dear Caroline,

It’s normal to feel envious of how close they are, but do you think this jealousy stems from insecurity? A chat with your friend should put your worries to rest. You should be glad they get on, as many couples break up due to a rift caused between friends. Enjoy the best of both worlds!

Prick Without a Conscience

Dear Charlie, I’m really worried about one of my best friends. He treats girls really badly and only ever has one-night stands – he’s even had a chlamydia scare. How can I make him see sense and look after himself? Lucy, 21

Dear Lucy,

This is a tricky one. It is his business what (and who) he does in his spare time, but when he is putting others at risk it becomes much more serious. I would suggest you voice your concerns for him, but without being too confrontational. Also, a brief reminder about ‘safe sex’ may eliminate future trips to the GUM clinic.
