Single Review: A Boy Called Doris - Star Crossed Lovers

5/10

Manchester’s A Boy Called Doris slow down the age old teenage symphony of Romeo and Juliet to a pedestrian stumble down a dark Fallowfield alleyway. Resulting in a chance student fumble between one hit wonders Bran Van 3000’s ‘Drinking In L.A.’ and Eels’ ‘Going Over To Susan’s House’, ‘Star Crossed Lovers’ encounter under a naff glockenspiel twinkling like the bright lights of the curry mile.

Have your say, tell us what you think...

I caught this track on XFM last week and agree with Boony that it's pretty much on the money, unlike your review.

I love this band!!!

I saw them playing at Dublin Castle the other day, thought they were awsome - there are so many bands who claim to be 'different' but this band really is different. The male singer has such a wonderful voice, very harsh and can't really sing but his style of singing is so unique. Girls have the most beautiful voices which go really well together with the man's voice.

Fair enough, I thought the glok is a bit naff, but the naff-ness is what they are doing on purpose, I suppose. If you don't get it, you wont get what they are about...

We're based in Manchester, ta. "Doris" is from near London, mind.

i actually realy like the song, im not sure about the reviews constant use of mancunian metaphor tho... i believe the singer is from near london (you can tell better on the b-side) i love the contrast of coarsness in the male vocals to that of the sensuous sirens of the female harmonies - yes the glockenspiel does sound naff, but for me, that adds to the bedroom budget charm (plus it plays the catchiest hook ive heard in a long time). A Boy Called Doris would be lucky to get enough exposure to make them a one hit wonder - but having seen them play live they provide the kind of sonic variety that this modern indie scene so desperatley needs.
