Library Set to Open 24hrs

The main University Library is set to open its doors 24 hours a day to allow student access throughout the night. The John Rylands Library is going to trial round the clock opening hours during the main exam periods next academic year. The move comes after sustained pressure from the Students' Union and continuous requests from students to extend opening hours.

Students voted against a proposal to ban the military from the University campus last Wednesday. The proposal, tabled at the last general meeting of the Students' Union this year, had caused much controversy across campus over the previous week, attracting national media attention.

Manchester's LGBT Society scooped two prizes at the NUS LGBT Awards ceremony last week. Winning the Involvement Award and getting third prize for the LGBT Society at The University of Manchester, several students from Manchester turned up at the ceremony held in Nottingham.

Graduates will not be finishing university life with a big bang this year, with the cancellation of the annual Graduation Ball. Dwindling attendance was blamed for the ball's cancellation. Last year only 650 tickets were sold, leaving about a quarter of capacity unused.

Student Direct has learned that the University is planning to trial the use of Googlemail and Hotmail as providers for the email system, replacing the current internally administrated 'Webmail' server.

Protestors Clash With Police

A dramatic student protest brought Oxford Road to a standstill last week. Over 200 protestors clashed with police on Tuesday and brought rush hour traffic to a halt as they marched around campus. Police back up was called in from across Manchester, including undercover officers, several riot vans and a tactical support unit. A police helicopter was scrambled to monitor the march around south campus.

Student access to the notorious Arthur Lewis building is to be improved in the aftermath of the "Reclaim the Uni" protest last week. A number of changes are being planned by the University to address problems with the building raised by students.
