MANCHESTER'S LGBT Society scooped two prizes at the NUS LGBT Awards ceremony last week.
Winning the Involvement Award and getting third prize for the LGBT Society at The University of Manchester, several students from Manchester turned up at the ceremony held in Nottingham.
LGBT Society of the year was won by Lancaster University for its group yourLGBT.
Designed to celebrate the achievements of student activism in securing the rights that the LGBT community benefit from today, the categories included Best Campaigner and Best Publication.
The panel of judges for each award included members from the NUS Liberation Unit, diversity specialists from award sponsors and leaders from the third sector.
Several major companies sponsored the awards with Pricewaterhouse Coopers and Barclays Bank amongst those celebrating the students' achievements.
Jennie Killip, UMSU Women's LGBT Secretary nominated the LGBT group at the University of Manchester and was pleased with the way that the awards had been designed.
She said: "Previously they have just had a category for LGBT groups in similar awards ceremonies but I thought these were more important, as they got a lot of big businesses on board.
"For example there were cash prizes which can help small societies and a day working with Stonewall (a leading gay rights campaign group).
"I think that the main benefit of these types of award is that they give society something to aim towards."
The NUS have also recently announced another set of awards to take place this summer, celebrating the best students in the UK.
Categories include those for Students' Unions, media and individual achievements as well.
They are also attracting business sponsorship with Endsleigh Insurance sponsoring the awards, with cash prizes available for the winners.
