Manchester Slumps in Student Satisfaction

STUDENT SATISFACTION in Manchester is abysmally low, a new survey has revealed.

Scoring third from the bottom, the only universities surpassing Manchester in student dissatisfaction were Middlesex, Leeds Metropolitan, Cumbria and London University of Arts, which ranked at the very bottom of the table. The best student satisfaction rating was given to the Cambridge University.

Individual subject ratings at Manchester fared better, with Chemical Engineering coming third and Materials Technology sixth in the country.

Music, Pharmacy and Nursing also did well, coming in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively, likely due to the good links these courses have with local facilities.

It was in core Humanities degrees that the University struggled most to compete with other institutions. English and History students were only on the 38th and 37th best courses in the country.

The greatest disappointment was for the Business Studies, with Manchester ranking only fourteenth, despite Manchester Business School being widely considered the best in the country.

Overall, The University of Manchester ranked 27th in the UK, up four places from 31st last year.

The University did well in areas such as research assessment and facilities, which have seen massive investments over the past few years, largely at the cost of student satisfaction, as recent student protests have shown.

Student contact hours have almost halved over the past twenty years, and staff reductions especially in the library and IT department have caused mayhem for students trying to revise or finish dissertations.

The student satisfaction poll was part of the newly published The Good University Guide published by The Independent and completed by final year students across the country.
