Police Move to Reassure Students

IN RESPONSE to Student Direct's safety survey, Greater Manchester Police were keen to point out that crime levels in Manchester are no worse than any other inner city area.

They also highlighted reductions in student related crime recently, and explained how liaisons between the police and the student population had lead to this decrease.

A spokesman said: "The reductions are as a direct result of initiatives that enable us to interact directly with the student community."

He was also keen to respond to the perception that there are low levels of security on campus saying: "There has been significant investment in CCTV which covers the student areas and helps to prevent and detect crime."

Police pointed out that while crime levels in Manchester were possibly higher than many students' home town, it was possible to reduce your chance of being affected by crime: "By following simple safety advice students can dramatically reduce their chances of becoming a victim of crime."

Students were warned not walk home alone at night and to try and pace their drinks in order to stay alert to any crime risks.
