Setting Priorities

THIS WEDNESDAY is the first General Meeting of the semester.

Starting at 1.30pm in Academy Two there are a number of motions to be discussed.

First up for discussion is 'Love Without Borders', a campaign to condemn the persecution of LGBT people worldwide.

In keeping with LGBT Awareness week this is a motion against the discrimination of transsexual students.

Also on the agenda is 'Fighting For A Free Education' and a motion calling for cheaper printing and photocopying in the libraries and Students' Union.

The university's campus is also going to be brought up with 'Going Green' and 'More Art on Campus' motions proposed. These are calling for better recycling facilities and more art and paintings on Union buildings respectively.

Due to the low number of women's officers at universities in the UK, the motion 'Solidarity With Women's Officers' aims to tackle this.

Furthermore, reproductive rights will be discussed along with 'Clearing Racists Off Our Campus' and 'Organising Working Students', which aims to protect the growing number of students who work while at university.

General Meetings are notorious for not meeting quorum. The last meeting to achieve this was the meeting last semester regarding the twinning of The University of Manchester with a Palestinian university which had over 1,000 people attend.

300 people are required for a General Meeting to take place. If there are less than 300 people present, no debate can be held.
