TOP ECONOMIST Joseph Stiglitz is to receive an honorary degree from the University this autumn, it had been revealed.
The distinguished professor will receive a Doctor of Social Science degree in October this year.
Bolton Wanderers director Edwin Davies, leading composer Edward Gregson and Dame Julia Higgins were also set to receive honorary degrees from The University of Manchester.
Edwin Davies, an Isle of Man based millionaire, owns 94.5 percent of Burnden Leisure plc – the parent company that controls Bolton Wanderers Football Club.
Joseph Stiglitz, a 65-year-old Nobel Laureate is widely-regarded as a world class academic and is a former Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank.
The American has chaired the Brooks World Poverty Institute at The University of Manchester since November 2005.
The University’s board of governors have now formally approved the decision to award the honorary degrees.
A spokesman said: “Joseph Stiglitz will receive his DSocSci at the Honorary Degree Ceremony sometime in October.
“Nominations are considered by the Awards and Honours Group who meet in the spring of each year.
“If they approve a nomination it goes as a recommendation first to Senate and then to the Board of Governors for ultimate approval.”
Edward Gregson is regarded as one of the world’s leading composers and is the Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
Professor Dame Julia Higgins is Professor of Polymer Science at Imperial College London.
Mr Edwin Davies will receive a Doctor of Social Science degree, Prof Edward Gregson will be made a Doctor of Music and Prof Dame Julia Higgins will become a Doctor of Science.
