"Reclaiming cunt: Don't let your vagina be an insult!" is one of the bold motions to be discussed at this week's general meeting. Women's rights campaigners are calling for the term 'cunt' to be transformed from an insult into a positive word, shedding its degrading connotations.

NUS Commits to Fighting Top-Up Fee Increases

The National Union of Students has scraped its calls for free university education, in favour of a more "pragmatic" campaign against lifting the tuition fees cap. Instead of demanding the abolition of fees, the organisation will fight against the possible removal of the cap, a move which has disappointed some campaigners.

Another Union Sponsored Anti-Climax

Just one non-candidate turned up for the NUS delegate election hustings event last week in what was slammed as "a complete farce" by one candidate. The embarrassing showing was blamed on the "inactivity" of the Returning Officer, who is also the Students' Union Communications Officer.

NUS Elections See Low Turnouts

Low turnouts continued to plague the NUS elections last week, with only 3% of students turning up to have their vote counted. Twenty delegates were elected for the Annual NUS conference which will be taking place in April, at which the controversial governance review will be discussed.

Last week's general meeting was cancelled due to poor attendance – for the third time this academic year. Wednesday's meeting had been scheduled for 1.30pm, but did not have the three hundred students needed for quorum by 2pm and was therefore cancelled.

Fundamental changes to the way that elections are run in the Students' Union were blocked last week. Students' Union elections have long suffered from very low turnouts so the reforms were drafted to get the 'ordinary student' interested.
