FROM DUSK till dawn, this bustling city has it all. Bristol’s art scene is second to none, from the modest Arnolfini to the grand SS Great Britain, crowned UK museum of the year 2006. If you prefer something a little more abstract, you don’t have to go too far until you hit the scrawling of ‘Banksy’ around his hometown. The city’s Hippodrome, playing musicals such as Mamma Mia! and The Nutcracker, is also a definite must, while seasonal specialties include the ‘winter wonderland’ ice skating rink at the out of town Cribbs Causeway shopping mall.
Home to thousands of students, bustling Bristol could easily rival Manchester for a great night out. Park Street is certainly the place to be if it’s indie rock you’re after, with the floating club Thekla waiting for those wanting to rock out on the river. For a swankier scene, nearby Clifton Village is perfect. There you can enjoy a glass of wine whilst looking out onto the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge. Whilst the crazier student nights can be found in the city’s more central clubs, if you’re just popping out for a few cocktails why not try Whiteladies Road?
The newly renovated city centre, to be completed in 2008, is definitely going to be worth looking out for. Amongst other well known shops, Bristol will be the home of a new Selfridges and Harvey Nichols - a definite shopping hotspot! Getting around couldn’t be easier with the entire city centre within walking distance, a user-friendly bus network and two main railway stations. The city’s also a twenty-minute train journey from historical Bath and 30 minutes from bustling Cardiff.
